Blackmore homestead six generations old
by Judy Farr, Sunday News Staff Writer
TROY - The Robert Blackmore homestead at 2771 W. State Route 55, Troy, has been in the family for five generations. David, still living at home with his parents, and Stephen, now farming the land, are, along with their brother Larry and sisters Rita, Jane and Ann, the sixth generation to live on the land.
The Blackmores trace their ancestry and land ownership back to James Blackmore II,County Devon, England, who with his wife Miriam Foxwell and three children sailed for America in 1817. On May 25, 1818 or 1819, they settled in section 31 of Concord Township. He paid for the 150 acres of land in 1827. The cost - $1.62 per acre.
Four or five more children were born to James and his wife while they lived near Troy. The family probably lived in a log cabin, which until about 1910 was located just west of the present house.
Mark, one of their children, next settled on the homestead. It was probably during his lifetime that the original part of the present Blackmore house was built. What are now the dining room, kitchen, utility room and bath of the west part of the first floor of the house were probably the living room, bedroom kitchen, and pantry of the original structure, according to Mrs. Robert Blackmore.
Later the house was extended eastward with the addition of a larger livingroom area and three small bedrooms, and upward with two upstairs bedrooms.
In 1898 the house and property were acquired by David Edgar, the youngest of Mark and Amelia Carey Blackmore's eight children. David Edgar and his wife Cora Keerr Blackmore had two children, Arthur and Minnie (Mrs.Omar Schram of Troy). Arthur was next to acquire the homestead in 1942.
From1935 to 1953 the house was rented to the Walter Rehmert family. The Rehmerts, who now live in West Milton, raised dairy cattle, grew grains, and produced tobacco and prize-winning tomatoes on the rich farm land.
"We loved it there," say Mrs. Rehmert. "The house was close to the road and the place was close to Troy." Arthur Blackmre found another farm for them when his son Robert wanted to farm the land.
In 1953 the Robert Blackmore family hired contractor Leonard Pour to remodel the house. The Blackmores has discovered that the timbers supporting the house were infested with termites, and they already knew that they appreciated indoor plumbing, so they were more eager to modernize the house than to strive for meticulous restoration.
Today, after more remodeling changed to add a second downstairs bathroom, more closet space, and an attached garage in 1969, "There's not a window or door left where it was" in the original part of the house, says Mrs. Blackmore. The house now has more open space and evokes a lighter and brighter feeling.
Now the only barn on the property is the gray horse barn, formerly a tobacco barn. The big old barn, which until 1969 was east of the house is gone, but parts of it survive. Some of the barn siding and beams now decorate Troy's Holiday Inn Restaurant.
